Natural baby skincare - hypoallergenic & preservative-free

Baby skin deserves only the real thing. Fourth Era for kids and babies: 0% preservatives, 0% water, 0% mineral oil.

What's actually in conventional baby skincare?

Preservatives in water-based baby products

Water-based creams contain water, and water is the perfect environment for microbial growth.

That's why almost every conventional baby cream needs preservatives - phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, methylchloroisothiazolinone - to stop it spoiling.

The problem: baby skin is up to 5× more permeable than adult skin. Those preservatives sink in deeper, faster.

Mineral oils and silicones as fillers in baby care

Products like petroleum-based barrier creams contain mineral oil (a petroleum derivative) and silicones.

They're cheap to make and create a pleasant "glide", but they don't deliver real nutrients to the skin.

Worse still:
mineral oil forms an airtight film that blocks baby skin's natural moisture regulation - long-term, that's a problem.

Synthetic fragrance a hidden risk in baby products

"Parfum" on the label can mean 100+ different chemical compounds. None of them have to be listed individually.

Even brands that read as "natural" routinely use fragrance. Baby skin with eczema or allergies reacts especially quickly to fragrance.

Why baby skin is different

The facts

  • Up to 5× thinner stratum corneum than adult skin
  • 3× higher water loss (TEWL – transepidermal water loss)
  • ✓ pH 6.5–7.0 vs 4.5–5.5 in adults (less acidic = less natural protection)
  • ✓ Higher surface-to-body ratio (more area, more absorption)
  • Immature lipid barrier – only fully developed after 2–3 weeks

What that means

Baby skin isn’t “small adult skin” – it’s a different organ entirely. More permeable. Less natural defence.

That’s why what goes onto baby skin sinks in deeper and faster.

So: ingredients have to be more than safe – they have to be genuinely clean and natural. Baby skin doesn’t have the buffer to handle “tolerable but problematic” chemicals.

Why waterless skincare is the logical choice for babies

No microbial load

Without water, bacteria and fungi can't grow. That's not a marketing trick - it's microbiology 101. That's why ABBIE doesn't need preservatives and stays naturally stable.

100% active concentration

Water-based creams are 40–60% water. ABBIE is 100% active ingredients - plant-based oils and natural waxes. That's safer and more efficient.

No preservatives = less irritation

Phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, methylchloroisothiazolinone - those are preservatives, not actives. ABBIE doesn't need them and doesn't contain them. Full stop.

Transparent, simple

INCI Every ingredient in ABBIE is listed explicitly. No hidden "fragrance" blend, no E-numbers. Parents see exactly what's going on.

Eczema in babies - ABBIE as the gentlest answer

The three Fourth Era products for kids and babies

The perfect babycare routine

Morning routine

1. Gentle cleanse

With lukewarm water (optional: 2–3 drops of LEON), gently wipe the face and exposed skin areas.

2. Apply ABBIE

A peanut-sized amount in your palms, then massage into face, neck, hands and any affected areas.

3. Get dressed

After roughly 2 minutes the balm has absorbed. Skin is now protected for the day ahead.

Evening routine

1. Nappy change & cleanse

With lukewarm water - or optionally 1-2 drops of LEON - gently clean the nappy area. Pat dry thoroughly.

ANGIE on the nappy area

A thin layer of ANGIE (or ABBIE) across the entire nappy area. Water-resistant and protective.

3. ABBIE all over

After bath time: pat the whole body dry, then apply ABBIE to body, face and neck. Bedtime with a moisture-locking barrier.

Tip – daytime nappy changes

At every change: a quick rinse with water, dry thoroughly, then apply ANGIE (or ABBIE). It keeps the skin dry, protects against friction and helps prevent nappy rash.

Common questions about baby and child skincare

Most conventional baby creams - even "natural" brands - contain preservatives, because they're water-based. Water is a microbial-growth medium, so these products need antimicrobial preservatives like benzyl alcohol or phenoxyethanol to stay shelf-stable. Fourth Era ABBIE is 100% waterless, concentrated natural skincare. Without water, microbes can't grow - so ABBIE doesn't need preservatives or parabens. That's the logically safest choice for sensitive baby skin.

With eczema (atopic dermatitis), baby skin has a disrupted barrier and loses moisture faster. ABBIE's rich formulation with plant-based oils and waxes supports the natural barrier - without the typical triggers like preservatives, synthetic fragrance or phenoxyethanol. The moisturising, protective effect is a strong fit for eczema-prone skin. ABBIE is NOT a medical product - for diagnosed eczema, always consult your paediatrician.

Nappy rash comes from moisture, friction and contact with urine and stool. An effective cream needs to create a protective barrier without irritating ingredients. ANGIE forms a water-resistant protective layer from natural oils and waxes - no preservatives or fragrance to irritate already-inflamed skin. Apply at every nappy change to keep moisture out and skin protected. ANGIE is built for these high-stress areas and is suitable from birth.

Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in many "natural" baby creams. According to a SCCS (EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) opinion, its use in baby-care products for children under 3 is restricted. Waterless skincare like Fourth Era ABBIE doesn't need phenoxyethanol at all - without water, microbes can't grow, so no preservative is required. That's the cleanest answer: instead of trying to control preservatives, you remove the reason they're needed in the first place.

Fourth Era ABBIE and ANGIE are suitable from birth. LEON cleansing oil can be used from around 3 months. For newborns under 6 weeks we recommend checking with your paediatrician before introducing new products. Beyond that, waterless skincare is genuinely well-suited to baby skin: the extremely thin, permeable barrier of newborns asks for maximum safety, and 100% natural actives without synthetic add-ons fit that brief exactly.

Both are high-quality natural products, but with fundamentally different approaches. Calendula creams are water-based and therefore need benzyl alcohol as a preservative, plus added fragrance. ABBIE is 100% waterless: 0% water, 0% preservatives, 0% mineral oil, 0% synthetic fragrance. Because ABBIE contains no water, it needs no antimicrobial agents at all - only pure, concentrated actives in an oil-and-wax base. For baby skin, where the demand for safety is highest, the waterless route is the logically safer one.

Baby skin loses moisture even faster in winter. Dry indoor heating constantly pulls water out of the thin baby barrier (up to 5× thinner than adult skin). Daily ABBIE morning and evening helps lock moisture in and reinforce the barrier. ANGIE can be added to particularly dry areas (cheeks, elbows, ankles). Avoid baths that are too hot, and use LEON instead of conventional baby washes - it emulsifies gently and lifts dirt without drying skin out.

Yes, ABBIE is well-suited to the face of a child with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. The formulation is fully fragrance-free (including essential oils, which can sting eyes and face), preservative-free and free of synthetic chemicals. For sensitive child faces, that's ideal. As always, do a patch test on a small area before applying it more widely. ABBIE isn't a medical product - for diagnosed eczema, the paediatrician sets the treatment plan.

Typical baby creams contain mineral oil (a petroleum derivative) that "suffocates" skin and blocks natural moisture regulation; synthetic fragrance, which can irritate sensitive baby skin; phenoxyethanol or other preservatives, which are needed because the water in those creams is a microbial-growth medium; and silicones used as "fillers" to improve the feel without delivering real nutrients. Baby skin is up to 5× more permeable than adult skin - so anything that goes on penetrates deeper and faster. ABBIE contains only plant-based oils and waxes, nothing synthetic - because baby skin asks for real nature, not petroleum.

LEON cleansing oil is built for gentle baby cleansing. Two or three drops in the bath water, or directly onto baby skin. The oil emulsifies softly with water and lifts away dirt and sweat without aggressive surfactants (SLS) or synthetic surfactants. No fragrance, no preservatives. The oil-to-milk technology spreads the oil evenly and rinses off easily. After cleansing with LEON, follow with ABBIE or ANGIE for moisturisation.
