The acid mantle is a thin, mildly acidic layer on the skin’s surface with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. It guards the skin against harmful pathogens, controls enzymatic activity within the stratum corneum, and preserves the epidermal barrier.

Conventional soaps (frequently reaching pH 9–10), many shampoos, water-based lotions, and alkaline oils can drive skin pH into an alkaline range. This impairs crucial pH-dependent enzymes and compromises the skin barrier. Research points to chronic diaper dermatitis as a clear example of what happens when skin pH remains elevated over time.

People with atopic dermatitis (eczema) have a markedly higher skin pH. The Yonsei University research team identifies this impaired barrier as a primary driver of the condition, not just a side effect. Using skincare products that push the pH even higher can aggravate flare-ups and symptoms.
